Florida Treasures – The Edison Museum

When many people think about Florida most just think about our beautiful beaches, however, there is so much more to see in our state. One of our treasures is the Edsion/Ford Estates in Fort Myers, Florida. This gem has always been of particular interest to us here at Small Jobs Electric because we have always been huge fans of Thomas Edison and of his contributions to the electrical industry and our trade. These estates are a definite “must-see” if you are in the Sunshine State! You can tour the winter homes of both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford along with Thomas Edison’s laboratory. Don’t miss the movie playing in the museum that explains Edison’s war on AC power or the many examples of Edison’s electrolier.

Did you know: what is the difference between an electrolier and a chandelier?

Thomas Edison believed that an electrolier is a fixture for holding electric lamps that you can screw a light bulb into. He believed that a chandelier is a branched fixture suspended from the ceiling that would hold candles only. We have all really had electroliers in our homes and we didn’t even know it!!
